Encounter
《ENCOUNTER》 explored different ways of encountering people and recording them as images through Suwa Im’s portraiture. The exhibition brought together drawings and archival materials from fashion week with portraits painted in traditional Korean ink through sustained study of photographs, interviews, and other sources. Rather than reproducing faces with precision, Im captured each person’s distinctive presence through fleeting expressions, gestures, and attitudes. Brief encounters on site and extended periods of reflection left different marks on the works, revealing the process of observing and portraying a person. Moving from magazine pages into the gallery, these images met the viewer’s gaze anew, inviting reflection on the moment of seeing another person and the traces that encounter leaves behind.

《ENCOUNTER》는 임수와의 인물화 작업을 통해 사람을 마주하고 이미지로 기록하는 서로 다른 방식을 살펴본 전시였다. 패션위크 현장에서 인물을 빠르게 포착한 드로잉과 아카이브, 사진과 인터뷰 등 자료를 오래 들여다보며 한국의 전통 먹으로 그린 초상을 함께 선보였다. 작가는 얼굴을 정확하게 재현하기보다 순간의 표정과 몸짓, 태도에서 드러나는 각자의 기운을 담아냈다. 현장에서의 짧은 만남과 자료 앞에서 쌓인 시간이 서로 다른 그림의 결로 남으며, 인물을 바라보고 기록하는 과정이 드러났다. 잡지 지면에서 전시장으로 옮겨온 이미지가 관객의 시선과 다시 만나며, 한 사람을 바라보는 순간과 그 만남이 남기는 흔적을 돌아보도록 제안한 전시였다.
